This past Monday on Raw, Roman superman punched AJ Styles in the jaw and he’s going to do it again this Sunday at WWE Payback. The reason why Roman attacked AJ was because he doesn’t believe that AJ is telling the truth when he says he has nothing to do with Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows. He respects AJ as a singles competitor and he knows that he’s been all around the world and he’s been buddies with Anderson & Gallows, so the point is AJ Styles is not fooling anybody here. Dec. 14, 2015 is a night Roman Reigns will never forget.

That’s when he pinned Sheamus to win his second WWE World Heavyweight championship, but that somehow wasn’t his biggest accomplishment.

His biggest on that night was receiving universal praise from the usually hard-to-please fans of Philadelphia, who had jeered him out of the building at the Royal Rumble just 11 months prior.

The reaction he received at the Rumble served as a wake-up call for Reigns, who proceeded to go back to the drawing board and improve upon his entire skill set in and out of the ring.

After he won the title in December, he credited the Philadelphia fans for lighting a fire in him that was not lit before.

“I told the crowd that night that if I didn’t experience what I did at the Rumble the year prior, I don’t think I would have this type of year,” Reigns said. “I don’t think I would have made improvements. I don’t think I would have stepped my game up.”

“Sometimes, you have to feel that fire and let it be lit under your [butt],” he added.

Everything seemed finally to come together for Reigns. Not only was he the champion of the top wrestling promotion in the world, he also had finally won most fans — or so we thought.

A lot can change over three months and Reigns knows that, as the fans are once again indifferent toward him. And sometimes, fans are flat-out against him.

Unfortunately for Reigns, this is a position he has now become accustomed to, as he headed into the main event of last year’s WrestleMania with fans largely against him despite being positioned as the knight in shining armor attempting to slay the dragon known as Brock Lesnar.

This year, it’s a different opponent (Triple H) with slightly different circumstances, but the scrutiny surrounding Reigns remains the same.

To his credit, Reigns remains unflappable. He hears all the positive and negative reaction toward him. In his eyes, as long as there is some sort of reaction, he is fine with it.

“I think every great person has that little bit of a split, but for me, I’ll always have my supporters.” Reigns said. “I’ll always have the Roman empire. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody else other than myself and my supporters and my loved ones, so if my health is good, I’m going to go out there and kill it.

“If you like it, you like it,” he added. “If not, you’re just going to be mad … a lot.”

For Reigns, it is like when he played football at Georgia Tech. When the Yellow Jackets played at home, the fans were firmly behind him, but when they walked into hostile environments such as Florida State and Clemson, the fans were not all welcoming.

These days, there are no shoulder pads or helmet to shield him. Neither are there dozens of teammates going through the same ordeal.

“I’ve heard really loud cheers and I’ve heard really loud boos, but they’re typically never different from that. They’re always really loud,” Reigns said.

“When they’re not with you when you walk into that away game, you better believe I’m going to shut you real quick,” he added. “He might be your favorite wrestler, but I’m your favorite wrestler’s favorite wrestler.”

While that may sound as if Reigns carries quite a chip on his shoulder, he maintains that he is fine with the scrutiny and constant critiquing from fans and pundits. In his eyes, there are much worse things to get upset about than a few fans booing him.

Life can be harsh. It can even be unfair at times, but it can be even more so for people dealing with more serious issues. No matter the reaction, Reigns is still healthy, gainfully employed and providing a better life for his family.

“No one wants to be picked at,” he added. “At the end of the day, we’re all human beings with feelings and emotions. Nobody wants to be critiqued and picked apart, but it’s the nature of the business. It comes with the territory. For me, if they’re not talking about you, that’s where you can run into some trouble.

“Life is great,” he added. “As long as I’m healthy and as long as I’m able to do my thing and my family is happy, then I’m happy because I enjoy being in the ring.”

For Reigns, life really is great. No matter how anyone feels about him, people have to pay attention to him, and having such an ability can help him participate in many WrestleMania main events for years to come.

What the reaction will be at those WrestleManias, however, is anyone’s guess.

Jojo interviewed Roman Reigns about the main event. She asked whether his relationship with Dean Ambrose would ever be the same again after tonight. He said the WWE wouldn’t be the same after tonight. He said a lot of things would change after tonight. Dean showed up and agreed saying that only one of them is going to be on the road to Wrestlemania. Dean said the other one is going to be watching. Dean said he’s hitchhiked enough and wants to see what life is like in the Fast Lane. Roman said not to book that trip. Dean said he got a great deal on Priceline. Ugh. Awful. No one speaks this way. They agreed Brock was something they were going to have to deal with and then they would deal with each other.

WWE World Heavyweight championship match at Wrestlemania 32: Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns.

Lesnar went right after Ambrose and rammed him into the buckles. Reigns (who was booed upon entering) attacked Brock but ate a German suplex. Ambrose returned but was quickly displaced from the ring. Lesnar nailed another German suplex on Reigns. He was going for a third but Ambrose nailed him with a missile dropkick from behind. Lesnar nailed several shots. Ambrose got behind and went for a German but Brock broke free and sent him sailing with a belly to belly overhead suplex. Very physical early.

Brock went to the floor to go after Roman. Dean went for a dive to the floor but was caught and nailed with a suplex on the floor. It’s all Lesnar so far. Lesnar nailed another German suplex on Reigns. Lesnar nailed another. He picked up Reigns and nailed an F5 but Ambrose broke up the pinfall. Lesnar looked at him as if he was crazy for messing with Brock.

Ambrose slapped him so Lesnar lost it and drilled him with knees and suplexed him across the ring. He began drilling Dean with knees and suplexed him again. Lesnar nailed another one. Dean tried to crawl away but was powered up and suplexed over again. Lesnar went for an F5 but Reigns speared him for a close two count. They shot the sequence in a way that made it seem Roman came out of nowhere to make it a bigger shock. Nice.

Roman nailed the Superman Punch but Lesnar rolled out of the ring from the force of the move. Roman charged across the floor and leapt off the stairs but Lesnar caught him on his shoulders. The best laid plans of mice and men, indeed. He went for a F5 onto the announcer’s table but Ambrose nailed a low blow. Dean ripped apart the announcers’ table and they set up for the old Shield powerbomb through a table. The crowd loved that.

Dean and Ambrose had words and Dean kicked him and threw Roman into the stairs. He tossed Roman into the ring and attacked him and nailed a running bulldog. Ambrose went to the top and nailed a flying elbow for a two count. Roman came back with several rights. Dean fired back with shots of his own. They brawled in the center of the ring. Roman and Dean both realize Lesnar is stirring so they give up their battle and go back to attacking him, sending him through the barricade. They begin to clear off another announcing table. They do the Shield powerbomb on Brock again. They buried Brock in the remnants of the tables.

Roman then drilled Dean with a right hand, giving him a receipt from earlier. They returned to the ring, only this time Roman was working all over him. Roman used a roll-through into a powerbomb but Dean escaped with a series of elbows. He came off the top but ended up on the wrong end of a Superman Punch. He went for a spear but was kneed in the face. He went for a charge in the corner but Dean moved and Roman hit the ringpost. Ambrose nailed Dirty Deeds and scored a CLOSE two count.

Both men were down and Dean pointed at the Wrestlemania sign. The crowd chanted, “This is awesome.” He went fo Dirty Deeds again but Roman pulled him up for a Samoan Drop. Lesnar hit the ring and nailed a German suplex on Roman, who was holding Dean. Pretty wild stuff.

Roman speared Lesnar but was trapped in the Kimura. Roman fought to his feet and stood up but was still trapped. Ambrose returned with a chair and beat the hell out of Lesnar’s back with it, then turned to Roman and began beating him with the chair as well. He ran Lesnar out of the ring but Roman speared him and scored the pin.

Your winner, Roman Reigns!

A hell of a physical main event with all sorts of great brawling, spots and near falls. This was truly a main event as it was the best thing on the show and the crowd was into everything and everyone involved. Dean Ambrose absolutely took a big step forward with his fearlessness against Lesnar and his willingness to attack his “brother” Roman. The crowd loved him tonight and I hope WWE realizes that.

Triple H came out in his suit wearing the WWE championship belt over his shoulder. They faced off in the ring to close the show.

Ever since Roman Reigns won the WWE World Championship on Monday Night Raw, there has been a target on his back.

It’s one versus all.

The 30-year-old competitor must take this mentality into the Royal Rumble 8 p.m. ET. Sunday, Jan. 24 on pay-per-view and WWE Network. There, Reigns must overcome 29 other superstars to retain his title. The odds are not in his favor, but he is ready. You can believe that.

“If there is a match I’m prepared for experience-wise, it’s the Rumble,” Reigns said. “The battle-royal-style match has been good to me. In the past two years, I have collectively been in there an hour or so, if not more. I have the elimination record for not the actual match, and I’ve won it before. So I like to think I have a lot of good things going for me. You just never know what can happen. You never know who is going to be in the Rumble. It’s 29 other guys. This event has a history of great debuts, comebacks, surprises, things that will make you laugh, things that will make you jaw drop. It’s going to be a great night hopefully for me.”

The popular superstar’s accolades this early on in his career is impressive. However, the ascent to the top wasn’t without obstacles. The football player turned grappler enjoys a good challenge and meets each one head-on. His strive to be the best has helped him as champion fulfilling all the obligations being the top dog entails.

“I’ve been running pretty busy, even in The Shield days,” Reigns said. “I think WWE did a good job of preparing us. From pretty much day one we were doing a lot of stuff all the time. We had the shows, behind the scenes work and a lot of media. Then, when we broke up and went into singles mode, it intensified even more so. I was already running that super hectic schedule already. So it kind of prepared me. There have been times I’ve been in seven or eight segments in one night. So if you can handle that, you can handle anything. The main difference is the gear bag. It’s just so heavy. But it’s the best kind of heavy. I love lifting this.”

Caught in a whirlwind of responsibility inside and outside the ring can be overwhelming. Reigns has even more added pressure with some of the biggest names including Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, John Cena and Seth Rollins on the sidelines.

“We are a little banged up as a roster right now,” Reigns admitted. “That happens. This is a physical performance that we go out there and do. Everybody knows that it’s definitely not ballet. So we know what we signed up for. The good thing is it allows people to step up. I’m not the only guy on this roster. There are plenty of guys who have been helping me and the company out tremendously. Plenty of guys you probably haven’t heard about in a while — or at all. Just like any other sport, any time a guy goes down it is unfortunate and brings the next man up.

“That creates a great opportunity for both men,” Reigns continued. “A newer guy gets to step up and get on this level. Then there is the guy who got hurt that has to rebuild to come back and evolve and start fresh. You see it all the time. When you see a guy come back after getting hurt, you see it in his face and eyes. The refresh factor is so crucial. We don’t ever have any time off. There is no off-season. Unfortunately, an injury can recharge your batteries.”

Reigns attributes much of his success not only to a steadfast work ethic, but the people who have his back at home and on the road.

“Even before winning the title I’ve always received great advice and been mentored properly,” Reigns said. “I have been prepared for such a vast track and too handle all these things. I have been reassured to trust myself. It becomes even if you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, you know what you’re doing. I was born to do this. This is the life I feel like I was supposed to live. For me, the person that helps me out and gives me the most is my wife. That is who pushes me and reassures me. I have a strong foundation. I have a strong support system, and that starts with the woman I love the most (wife Galina). She helps me and allows me to live this crazy life. She captains the ship on our own. She takes care of our household, our daughter and our livelihood that allows me to go out and live this circus life. Without her, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.”

The WWE Universe has been there for every step of Reigns’ journey in sports entertainment, from developmental to the main roster. Much like any emerging superstar, he has his off nights, but he makes sure to learn from them. After going solo Reigns has also dealt with a polarizing reaction at times, with criticism directed to his work on the microphone. His strengths have been his athletic ability and letting his actions do the talking.

“Everything is a process,” Reigns said. “We have to remember this is a show. We have storylines. Believe me, nobody wants more than to show up to the building and do what he wants to do than me. I’d love to just show up and say,’ This is what I’m doing. Thank you. I’ll see you out there.’ But it is a process. It’s a creative process, which I love. I love to be able to collaborate with people and bounce ideas and brainstorm together. That’s the most important thing. Sometimes you have to do what is best for the team, and you have to earn equity with respect and trust.

“Then when it gets to that point where you can let your hair down and run with the ball, you do that. Fortunately for me, I stayed the course. You’ve seen some bad stuff, some decent stuff, and what I like to think, some great stuff. It’s all about growth and progression. There is no off-season, so we have plenty of time and platforms with the shows we have to put that out there and show the evolution of a character and personality. That’s where I’m at now. I’m just trying to be me and have fun because fun reflects. People see that and enjoy themselves as a result.”

All eyes are on Reigns and his feud with The Authority made up of Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Vince McMahon. He enjoys working with the WWE chairman. After all, it’s not every day when your job involves punching your boss in the face.

“It’s been incredible,” Reigns said. “Behind the scenes and in front of the camera is a little different. There are a lot of ways to describe Vince McMahon. He is an incredible man. He has the biggest plate to load up in WWE. He has so many things on his shoulders. He is pretty much the WWE champion every single day with his responsibilities. He has a tremendous drive and work ethic that is unmatched. He has been doing this for so long. They say he is 70. I don’t believe it. I think it’s more like 40 by the way he looks. The shape that he is in. It’ s been incredible to be out there with him and build crowds with him and to share the ring with him.”

Professional wrestling runs through Reigns’ veins as a member of the famed Anoaʻi family. The Samoan bloodline includes the likes of his father Sika of the Wild Samoans and brother Rosey. Reigns also has an impressive list of cousins ranging from the Usos to The Rock. He was excited to find out the Hollywood heavyweight will be part of the WrestleMania 32 festivities in April.

“He is The Rock,” Reigns said. “This is where it all went down for him. This was the slingshot into what he is doing now. So he has always held that deep in his heart. He knows where he belongs and where his family is. To have the biggest live event and the biggest gathering in the world, why wouldn’t we have The Rock? As far as what he will do, what can’t he do? We can throw him into trunks to have him wrestle. He can come in like he did last year and cut a promo. He can bring his guitar and go out there to sing for an impromptu concert. We do a little bit of everything that day. So I think there is always a spot for him. He has been the host before. So he has worn many hats within this business. You just have to tune in to see what he is going to do next.”

With the road to WrestleMania kicking off Sunday at the Royal Rumble, Reigns has his eyes set on headlining once again. The master of the “Superman Punch” and the spear is focused on making the impossible possible.

“If it involves the main event of WrestleMania, that’s the key to me,” Reigns said. “I have to get through this Royal Rumble. I’m going through 29 competitors defending the WWE championship. It’s never been done. I got all the odds against me, and I’m number one. So if somehow I can pull off a miracle and get through this, I don’t care who I wrestle. If you’re defending the WWE championship at WrestleMania, you’re going to have a high-end and well-known opponent. That’s all I can ever ask for. Just being in the event is a great honor.

As he sits in a dark hotel room on very little sleep, mere hours after Monday Night Raw where he battled a group of superstars who are all vying for his championship, Roman Reigns is finding out what it means to be the champ and sitting atop of the mountain.

Reigns has never been down this road before. He’s no longer the hunter. He is now the hunted. After 8 months of chasing the title he nearly won at last year’s WrestleMania, Reigns finally grabbed the brass ring last month and won the coveted championship in front of a Philadelphia crowd.

Now Reigns must defend his title against 29 other WWE Superstars in Sunday’s Royal Rumble. That can be a lot to prepare for and handle especially when you’ve got the WWE Chairman Vince McMahon stacking the deck against you.

Luckily for us, Reigns took a moment to discuss his journey to the top, his family, life on the road, being “the man” and what lies ahead.

Feeling The Love

CraveOnline: You’ve always had a lot of supporters but now it seems you have less critics and an even bigger following. How does it feel to get all of that love now from the WWE Universe?

Roman Reigns: It’s success and hard work. If you really enjoy something and you have a lot of passion for what you’re doing, you put your heart out there and people see you’re having fun, I think it’s kind of a sparkplug and that’s what people want. They want that chain reaction and to feel a part of something. I think they seem to really enjoy myself this year and I busted my ass at the same time. It’s been a crazy year. It’s not like football or baseball. It’s not just a 16-week process. This is a 52-week process. They’ve seen me grow, mature and develop over the course of the year and I’m proud of that. I’m proud to say that the “Roman Empire” is growing every single week and I’m going to continue that.
/>CraveOnline: Last month you finally got over that hurdle and won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. What was going through mind when you finally won it?

Roman Reigns: Damn [laughs]. It was an overwhelming satisfaction. If you ever have some glory, to feel that moment, that’s what it felt like. It felt like hitting pay dirt and scoring that winning touchdown, you know what I mean? Strip, sack, scoop and score to win the game in overtime. I’m going to Disney World. I wish I had a camera in my face because I would have said it. For me, it didn’t even feel real because it really was my daughter’s birthday. Right now, I haven’t been home in 12 days. I’m sitting in my dark hotel room. I just woke up. I didn’t get to sleep until about 4 in the morning so there are a lot of things that go into this life. That’s why we’re so passionate about this business. We really live it every single day. It’s not just a job; it’s a lifestyle. It’s a way of life for us. For me, it was just an overwhelming feeling like God was tugging on some strings to make all of this line up. It felt like it made too much sense to make any sense.

Who was the first call you made after you won it?

My wife and daughter. My little girl was already asleep. She was passed out on the couch. She actually watched the whole show and three-fourths of the main event and then knocked out, bless her heart. By the time I got out there, she was struggling, my wife said.  But she watched a good bit of it but thank God for DVR.

Starting the Royal Rumble as the No. 1 entrant

CraveOnline: We found out on Raw that you’re going to be the No. 1 entrant in the 30-man Royal Rumble to defend your WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Is fatigue a factor in a match like that?

Roman Reigns: Yeah. Anytime you’re out there in between those ropes, you always have to worry about fatigue. If you think about it, people get tired just doing cardio. You get tired doing cardio just by yourself. Now imagine running around, picking somebody up, picking you up, trying to pin you, trying to hold you down, it gets very tiring. Any time you involve 29 other competitors and unfortunately for me, they’re all going to be gunning for me because this is a lot different. This is the first time ever we’re having the champion defend his title. For me, it’s a huge responsibility to come in there fully prepared but the WWE is not giving me a lot of time to prepare, you know what I mean? With the schedule that we run, just the nature of the business and being at the top, the top part of the office has it out for me. They’re going to make it extremely hard for me. Either way I’m going to dig deep. You’ve seen me get knocked down. You’ve seen me spit out blood but I pick myself up and I’ll keep going.

Feuding with Vince McMahon

CraveOnline: You’re feuding with the legendary Vince McMahon. What’s it like to work with him and to see him come out on camera as your foe?

Roman Reigns: It’s cool. It’s totally different. It’s totally different than being in there conversing with any other superstar or any “bad guy.” He is probably going to be the best “bad guy” of all-time.  He’s as good as it gets when it comes to being a jerk. It was an absolute pleasure just to be able to tell my grandkids, “Yep. I Superman Punched Vince McMahon right in the face twice.” You can put that on my mantle.

“I’m not John Cena. I want to be Roman Reigns. I want to do things my way.”

You’re “the man” now and you’re running with the ball. Do you feel pressure to be the face of WWE or are you embracing it?

I think there is pressure in anything we do in life. As a man, I feel pressure to provide and create a lifestyle and a future for my family. When it comes to representing the WWE, I don’t like calling myself the “face of WWE” because we have so many faces and so many superstars. We are a team, we’re a roster and we’re a locker room. It absolutely takes every man to make this ship sail. At the end of the day, all I can be is me. I’m not John Cena. In my 30 years, I’ve never been John Cena. I don’t even think about becoming him. I just want to be. I want to be Roman Reigns. I want to do things my way. I think that’s why I’m in the deep water with Vince McMahon and The Authority. I don’t even think we’re saying The Authority anymore. I think I busted that whole crew up. That’s all I can be. It’s just me representing myself and my family to the fullest.

Facing Brock Lesnar

“He tries to throw me as far as he can and I’m trying to rip his face off and break his ribs.”

CraveOnline: Last night you speared Brock Lesnar and it brought back memories of your physical and brutal main event match at WrestleMania last year. Is it different being in the ring with Lesnar compared to other WWE Superstars?

Roman Reigns: No because for me I have a chemistry with about everyone that I’m in there with. It doesn’t change but it’s a little bit different if that makes sense. If I’m in there with Bray Wyatt, we have chemistry. If I’m in there with Big Show, we have chemistry. I feel a fighting style and the way I go out there and do my thing, mixes well with a lot of WWE Superstars and the way they do their thing. It’s very simple [laughs] with the way me and Brock [Lesnar] do our battles. We hit really hard. He tries to throw me as far as he can and I’m trying to rip his face apart and break his ribs. It’s a brutal contest anytime him and I step into the ring. As you saw last night, you didn’t see any playing around. I went to the red button immediately and sometimes with him, you got to double-tap or triple that button. That’s probably what you’re going to see on Sunday.

CraveOnline: When you’re not in the ring and you’re on the road, what are you doing? Do you have any hobbies or guilty pleasures?

Roman Reigns: I’ve been on the road for over 3 years; the main thing when you’re on the road is you have to keep yourself comfortable. Make yourself feel like you’re at home because you’re not so you have to treat yourself a little bit and create a process that is going to help you to be able to do this every week. For me it’s not just traveling comfortable. I’m not in a bus or anything like that. I like to always have an SUV so whomever I’m traveling with we can always be comfortable. It’s important that you book a decent hotel because we spend a lot of time in these places so you have to be comfortable and treat yourself and take care of yourself. My body is the only body I have. This body has to carry me through and push through hopefully many, many more years to come.

You want to find a good gym. You want to eat and eat right but at the same time, if you’re dieting 24/7 and 52 weeks a year, you know I’ve never met a happy diet. You ever met a dude that is super shredded? He’s usually not cool at all. He’s usually not a nice guy because he’s so irritable because he’s been torturing himself for weeks so you got to have a guilty pleasure. Mine is I love to go eat some sushi with my family and friends and just hang out, have some beers and drink some sake. I’m actually on a little bit of a tip right now, unfiltered sake.   So just a cold beer, a plate full of sashimi and all kinds of specialty rolls, that’s my example of a good time.

That sounds like “date night” with my wife and I, just sushi and beers.

That’s “date night”, that’s out with the boys, that’s where I spend my money just on hanging out and having dinner with my family.

Peyton Manning or Tom Brady?

CraveOnline: It’s the NFL conference championship week. Are you a Tom Brady guy or a Peyton Manning guy?

Roman Reigns: I’m a Brady and a Manning guy. What I like is when they play each other. I honestly think they’re possibly the two best ever especially [Tom] Brady if he snags another one. How many does Peyton [ManningI have? One? Yeah but if you’ve ever heard anything on the inside about him he seems cool and he seems like a great leader and it’s obvious by his stats and the career numbers he has put up. But I think Tom [Brady], he’s just won so many and he’s done it in some different ways with a different clientele. He’s done it with amazing squads like he had when they were almost undefeated and he’s done it when they barely squeaked into the playoffs and had to do the Wild-Card thing. I think in our lifetime we’ve seen two great quarterbacks and Tom Brady might be the best one ever but I think what pushes that is the rivalry between those great quarterbacks.

The Future

“I’m carrying the title all over the world…”

CraveOnline: Now what’s the ultimate goal for you and the dream scenario with this WWE World Heavyweight Championship run?

Roman Reigns: Well, I’ve been defending it and having big championship fights every single night,  all the way from the tiniest little town in Ohio to India. I’m carrying the title all over the world at this point and soon will take it to Germany hopefully if I can get through this Sunday. Right now the goal is to get through Sunday and take out 29 men or however many. Hopefully somebody can help me out [laughs]. Can somebody else throw somebody else over the top rope? It would be nice if I didn’t have to throw all 29 out but that’s what I’m willing to do and if I can get through that then I can do anything.

She asks Reigns if he came to beat her dad up again. Fans cheer and Vince doesn’t think so. He asks why Reigns is out here, pal. Reigns just has one question – what happens if he wins at the Rumble. Stephanie starts laughing and says Reigns is delusional. Back and forth leads to Vince revealing a 1 vs. All Match later with Reigns. Also, WWE Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose is in our first match. Sheamus nails Ambrose from behind on the stage and that’s his opponent.
