Dean Ambrose says that Triple H talked about humbling them and eliminating them. Then Triple H hides behind his goons. That looks like Evolution might be afraid of the Shield. He hopes that is not the case. They wanted Evolution who wanted to fight. This 20 on 3 crap is not what they wanted.

Evolution vs. The Shield

The Shield didn’t come right out, which the announcers said was the team playing mind games with Evolution by making them wait.

They had a brief brawl before being held apart. Seth Rollins started strong nailing a leaping knee on HHH and then clotheslining him over the top to the floor. Evolution took Rollins apart, working him over. Batista nailed a kick to Rollins are he was hanging out of the ring. Evolution took turns working over Rollins, tagging in and out. Rollins was picked up for a suplex and dropped across the ropes hard.

Rollins tried to fight his way out and went for a tag but Evolution knocked Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns off the apron. Rollins finally made the tag to Ambrose, who cleaned house with a series of wild punches and stomps on Orton. He nailed Batista off the apron and drilled Orton with a clothesline. He went for a figure four on HHH but saw Orton coming and nailed him, then locked it on him.

Batista and Reigns brawled on the floor and Reigns sent him hard into the barricades. Reigns charged HHH but HHH moved and Reigns crashed hard into the ring steps. Dean Ambrose made his entrance, through the crowd, for the main event. The other Shield members were with him, but Ambrose walked down the stairs alone. He defends his title next.

As Ambrose awaited his opponents, the finish of Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns from Raw was shown, as well as the post-match. Interestingly, despite being a tag team, Ryback and Axel came out separately. All entrances were shown and, just to stretch things out further, Lilian Garcia did formal ring introductions. Admittedly, nice to see for a U.S. Title match. At the start of the match, the three heels cornered Ambrose. He didn’t show much fear, going after all of them. After sending Ambrose to ringside, the heels turned on each other. Axel and Ryback got in each other’s faces, but Ambrose came back in before they could go at it. Ryback gave Ambrose a spinebuster and he again was sent to ringside. Rybaxel eyed Del Rio as they went to break.

Ryback and Axel were still working over Del Rio. Back-stabber on Ryback for two, with the pin broken up by Ambrose. Again, Ambrose broke up a pin, this one by Axel. Axel and Ryback sent Ambrose back-first into the barricade outside the ring. In the ring, a dropkick by Axel wasn’t enough to put Del Rio away. Ambrose clobbered Del Rio and then low-bridged Ryback out. Running dropkick by Ambrose, but his momentum stopped when Axel nailed him from behind. Ryback pulled Ambrose out of the ring by his head and sent him into the timekeeper’s area. In the ring, Perfect Plex by Axel on Del Rio for only two, right about at the 10:00 mark. Del Rio came off the top and stomped on the chest of Axel, whose feet were caught up in the turnbuckle. Ryback went to clothesline Del Rio, but he ducked and Ryback clotheslined his partner. Cross arm-breaker on Ryback by Del Rio. Ryback countered and gave Del Rio a modified Shellshock. Axel pulled Ryback off the cover, however. As Axel crawled in, Ambrose cut him off with a magistral cradle for the pinfall.

WINNER: Ambrose

The heels attacked Ambrose but, with the match over, The Shield ran out to save their third member. Superman punch to Axel by Reigns, then they gave him the triple powerbomb. The Shield posed and celebrated in the ring as the show closed with Cole getting in some final hype for Extreme Rules.

Ambrose says that their is a reason they hired them to protect HHH and Orton. He says that they are the meanest, most feared group. He says their is no doubt they are angry. Rollins then grabs the mic from Ambrose. Rollins says that they have every right to be angry. He says that come Extreme Rules, they will only be looking out for themselves instead of a united team. Rollins says reforming Evolution was putting a nail in their own coffin, and they are the hammer to nail it in. Reigns then says that they will come down to that ramp when he drops the mic and beat their asses. He then says they can either fight, or be cowards. The Shield come down and out come 10 or so heels. Triple H says they can fight all they have to do is come to them. The Shield say they aren’t stupid and both groups have a stare down.

The Shield has been a hugely successful stable in WWE since they began, whether acting on their own, taking orders from Triple H or, most recently, finally turning from heels into faces. Heading into WrestleMania — and their six-man tag team match against Kane and the New Age Outlaws — I spoke to one of the members, Roman Reigns, about what makes their group work and the past, present and future of The Shield.

Reigns, who is part of an extended family whose huge number of wrestlers include everyone from The Rock to the Usos to Yokoznu to his own father, Sika of The Wild Samoans, also talked about following the family path to becoming a pro wrestler and what it was like seeing the industry from that perspective growing up.

IGN TV: You guys have such a crazy schedule, going pretty much year round, but do you feel that extra energy burst when WrestleMania comes about because there is so much hoopla; so much going on with it?

Roman Reigns: I think so. Obviously, WrestleMania is the pageantry of it all, and it’s so larger than life. It’s like being in Disney World or something like that. But for me, one of the coolest things with our business — and it’s not only WrestleMania — is any time I walk through the curtain, as soon as we get up in the concourse and you can feel the buzz of the people. They’re in the concourse and they’re yelling at you and trying to take pictures of you… Then as soon as those curtains open, we go down the stairs and anything that hurts — say, my elbow’s hurting — well, my elbow’s not hurting anymore, you know what I mean? So that’s the type of energy sports entertainment can give you. That’s why I think it’s so popular and so loved by our fans.

Roman Reigns.

IGN: You kind of brought me to a question I was going to ask down the line, which is your entrance stands apart from everyone else, coming through the crowd like that. At this point, is it just, “Oh, that’s our entrance,” or is still cool to have something so different?

Reigns: Yeah, for me, the coolest part is that I feel like we share it with the crowd. At first, it was like, “This is our entrance.” Now I feel like it’s our, the WWE universe’s, entrance. Those rows that we come down, they may be a hotter ticket nowadays, because the people can get close to us. They can get a sense for us. They may be able to get to grab us. You know, “Man, yeah, he is a big guy,” or “Man! Why is he so oily?” [Laughs] But it’s a cool experience. I think that’s important for us. We just hope to keep it. Hopefully nothing will ever happen with the crowd, because it’s just that energy you feel going through the people. You feel like you’re a part of them. I think that that’s what’s awesome.

IGN: Your family has such an amazing history in the industry. For you, was it an easy choice growing up, like, “I want to do that too,” or did you think, “I don’t know, maybe…”? W

Reigns: Yeah, as a young boy, I immediately wanted to wrestle. Then I started playing football, and I started to think, “Man, there are so many people that wrestle in my family. Do I want to be different and do something else?” So for awhile I flirted with that option, but the bug bit me, you know what I mean? This is just in my blood. I am supposed to do this. I could have tried to run away from it for more years, but I feel like I would have eventually come back. I’ll never regret the choices I’ve made. Unbelievable ride. This business has done so much for me, fed me since I was a little boy, and now I’m able to feed my family.

IGN: They say whether the crowd is booing or cheering, things are going good for you in wrestling as long as you’re getting a reaction. But for The Shield, it is interesting to be making that shift now? The crowd had been more and more behind you, and now you’re going into WrestleMania with a very different position than you used to have.

Reigns: Yeah, we’re kind of on the opposite side these days. But to speak truthfully, the crowd reactions have always been a bit positive for us — depending on where we go. Any time we’re up north, they’re very opinionated up there. We’ve always kind of been the good guys to the north. But like you said, as long as they’re not sitting on their hands, as long as that energy’s there, we just want people to get their money’s worth. That’s the most important thing. As we all know, it isn’t easy to provide for your family and to earn a living. So to take that money that you worked hard for and to put it into our product kind of depends on us to entertain you. That’s an awesome responsibility that we’re all looking forward to.

IGN: People have been wondering for awhile, “Are they going to split up?” While in the long run, no group will last forever, are you enjoying this for now or are you also looking ahead to when it might be time to go solo?

Reigns: You know, I’m preparing for whatever, but at the same time, I’m living in the moment. I’m enjoying what we do. We just have such a unique crew with the three of us. Our dynamic is phenomenal. We get along, we don’t fight — other than what you see here and there, which is going to happen with egos. But we make up. We’re boys, we’re brothers, and that’s what you do. Sometimes you’re going to fight your brother, but then if anybody else from the outside tries to mess with you, you’re going to stick up for them immediately. So it could be like, “Man, I hate you.” Then some other dude walks up, trying us, and it’s like, “Hold up. Put that on pause. Let’s handle this dude first.” So I love what we’re doing right now, and I feel like we have so much more storytelling within The Shield to do before what people call “the eventual breakup.”

Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns.

IGN: You never know what it’s going to be like when you put two guys, much less three guys together — if the chemistry will be right — but it seemed like you guys clicked very quickly. Did you feel that in your earliest days on RAW? Did you have that “This is working” vibe?

Reigns: Yeah, and it’s weird, because we have so many similarities, just our mindsets and how we do things and the goals that we have and the steps we’re willing to take to get there. But just the differences I think are what really helped us. Me being the bigger guy, we have that guy; we have a high flyer; and then we have a lunatic with a crazy mouthpiece. So I think we have all these puzzle pieces that are fitting together. It worked. It was just really organic. Nothing was forced, for the most part. Things just started happening, and they just flowed, and we rode them out. You can see it, all the way from the debut to what the Shield is now and what you’ll see on Sunday at WrestleMania.

IGN: Growing up, because of your family, how much were you backstage?

Reigns: The majority of the shows I’ve ever been to I was backstage, either watching on a monitor or in the locker room with wrestlers. The few times I had been in the crowd, it’s an awesome experience. I really wish I’d taken it back and been in the crowd a lot more growing up. A lot of people would be like, “No way, man. Backstage is sweet!” But it’s the show, man. For me, that’s what it’s all about — the fireworks, the pyro, the music, just the larger-than-life everything. But it was pretty cool being in the back.

Reason: A dominating showing at WrestleMania 30, followed by an impressive victory over The Wyatt Family on WWE Main Event, catapults The Shield up to No. 3 on this week’s rankings.  With their sights set on The Authority, there is no telling what the red-hot Hounds of Justice have in store for WWE’s power players.
